New Year's Resolutions & Announcement
I'm not much for resolutions, but there are some things that I'd like to see happen next year. I've been planning these things for a while, but now seems like the appropriate time to share...
Introduction
So, the countdown has begun to 2017 and lots of my friends are already putting together their New Year's Resolutions. I have 3 tasks I'd like to complete or work on in 2017: 1) begin a podcast, 2) finish my dissertation, and 3) adda sense of urgency to my Bible readings.Podcast

Bible Readings
I have no doubt that somewhere, perhaps even among my friends, someone is planning to read the Bible in a year. We've probably all listed that at some point in our lives, and some people have probably actually done it. It seems like a good idea, but one thing I've learned is that the Bible is too much for a year— and this is coming from a person who has blazed through 500-page novels in one day.The Bible isn't just long, it's complex. If you follow this blog, you know I've been doing quite a bit of Bible reading over the past two years, and you've probably seen how interesting some of the chapters get. When I read the Bible, I don't just read; I study. To understand what is being conveyed, sometimes we have to cross reference passages, read up on the historical context, research translation notes, or compare different interpretations. Reading at this level of intensity is guaranteed to take more than a year. I started in May 2015, and I'm only in 1 Samuel 29—of course, I'm also trying to graduate so I've had quite a few off days and weeks. Nonetheless, I never really intended to get through the whole Bible in a year. I don't want to rush myself, because I want to really study and understand the word. This is a different goal than when I first began reading the Bible. I think surface reading (which probably is doable in a year) is the best way to start; that way when you dive in, you already have a vague context of the whole book. At the same time, I'd like to finish before Jesus comes back, which means I should have some sense of urgency about getting to the end.
So this year, I'm making a schedule and my new years resolution is to stick to the schedule. I'm even creating the schedule with my other big plans for 2017—writing/defending my dissertation and starting the podcast—in mind. I'm sharing this with you guys for multiple reasons. You can join in if you'd like (though it starts in 2 Samuel since that's where I am in the reading). Also, you can have a better idea of when to expect updates on the blog. You can fuss at me via the contact page or in the comments if I fall behind.
